At the age of 3, Zach was found to have over a 25% developmental delay. At the age of 5, he was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome a high functioning form of autism. With Early Childhood Intervention Services and therapy, along with much determination we learned to meet Zach where he was. After being placed in an inclusion classroom environment, he was able to mainstream into his age appropriate classes. Included in this partnership package is a description of Asperger’s Syndrome. This will allow you to see how far Zach has come. It will also show you how he chooses to make this “disability” an “ability” and desires to inspire others with challenges.
His first racing season was in 2013 with the Hampton Roads Kart Club where he earned 9 wins out of 13 races. Zach was awarded the 2013 HRKC JR 1 Sportsman Championship and Rookie of the Year.
In 2014, prior to the start of his second season of racing, the team decided to pull double duty by not only racing a second season in karts but to also race a INEX Bandolero (scaled down version NASCAR governing division) at the Legendary Langley Speedway in Hampton, Virginia. That year, he not only won the 2014 HRKC JR. 1 Track Championship for the second straight year but also won the 2014 Rookie of the Year Award and Track Championship Award in the Bandolero division. By accomplishing this feat, he became the only driver in the 64 year history to win two titles, racing in two different race cars in the same racing season.
As he stepped into his third year of racing in 2015, Zach wanted to prove that he was ready to defend his Bandolero track title and his Karting titles. Determined more than ever to solidify his place in Langley Speedway History, he accepted the challenge to race a second season in his INEX Bandolero not only at his home track (Langley Speedway) but also at the National level. In addition, Zach decided to come back one more year and take his Phantom Triton go-kart to the track for his third and final karting season.
On October 1st, Zach was crowned the 2015 Langley Speedway INEX Bandolero Track Champion for the second straight year and an unprecedented third karting title in three years of racing. On January 30, 2016 Zach will add a third jewel to his Championship Crown in 2015 by being awarded the 2015 INEX VA State Bandolero Championship at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
